Step 9 - Customising Desktops

Sharetops is heavily customisable, with much of the customisation taking place in the desktops settings (located in the Manage Desktops dialog). To customise a desktop open up the Manage Desktop dialog from the Sharetops main menu. Select the desktop that you would like to customise then click the settings button. The following dialog should open:

There are many options that you can change to customise the way your desktops look and feel. Below is a description of each option along with its function:

  • General Options
    • Description – Here you can add a short description of what this particular desktop is all about
  • Icon Options
    • Default Icon Colour – This is the colour and opacity that all newly added icons will use for their name text when they are added to this desktop. Note that this colour can be overridden in the web links properties
  • Background Options
    • Design Width / Design Height – These are the pixel dimensions that you designed the desktop to be viewed in. if another user views this desktop in a different resolution then Sharetops will scale the desktop to keep the layout intact
    • Get Dimensions Button – This will collect the current browsers resolution and set it to the design width and height. This is useful if you do not know the resolution of your browser or you simply want to use your browsers current size
    • Force Scaling – This option forces Sharetops to scale your desktop to fit the visitors browser dimensions without altering the aspect ratio. Note that if the user’s browser is taller than it is wide then the Sharetop will be treated as though it was designed for a tall screen, allowing you to design content for tall displays. If you are unsure as to what this option means to you then leave it enabled
    • Background Fill mode – This option defines how the backgrounds wallpaper image or video is scaled to fit the browser window, Available options are:
      • Stretch – The background is stretched on both x and y axis to fill the users browser window
      • None – The background is displayed in its native size, leaving any uncovered screen area blank
      • Uniform – Scales the background until it fits within the design dimensions either on the x or y axis, leaving any uncovered screen area blank
      • UniformToFill – Scales the background until it fits within the design dimensions on both axis, clipping any overdrawn areas
    • Wallpaper URL - This option allows you to set the background wallpaper of the desktop using a direct URL or an image from the library
  • Window Options
    • Header Gradient – These two colours and opacities define the start and end gradient colours used by all window headers
    • Header Title Colour – Defines the colour of the header text used by all windows
    • Hide Headers – Enabling this option will force window headers of open content to hide themselves until the user hovers over them
    • Window Gradient – These two colours and opacities define the start and end gradient colours used by all window backgrounds
    • Window Border Colour – Defines the colour and opacity of the border that appears around all windows
    • Window Shadow Colour – Defines the colour of the shadow effect that appears around a windows border
  • Button Options
    • Button Gradient – Defines the start and end gradient colours and opacities used by all buttons
    • Button Hover Gradient - Defines the start and end gradient colours and opacities used by all buttons when the user hovers over them
    • Button Press Gradient - Defines the start and end gradient colours and opacities used by all buttons when the user presses them
    • Button Text – Defines the colour of text that appears on all buttons
  • Other Options
    • Grid Snap Size – When you drag around or resize windows / icons the position and size of these items will be snapped to the nearest n pixels. For example, a grid snap size of 20 would cause your icons / windows to be snapped to the nearest 20 pixel grid boundary. A value of 0 turns off grid snapping.

Using the above options it is possible to completely redefine the look of each of your desktops
