Step 7 - Editing Desktop Links

Once a web link has been created and added to a desktop you can easily edit its properties by hovering over the icon and clicking the “Edit Properties” button to the upper left, see below for example:

Send Video Link Example Image

Clicking the Edit Properties button will open the following dialog:

Edit Web Item Image

As you can see there are a fair number of options. Some of these options are specific to certain types of web links. For example, a web page link would not contain the “Repeat” property as this property is only applicable to video and audio media files.

Below is a description of all properties that appear in the Edit Web Item dialog:

  • Name – The name of the resource as it appears on the desktop
  • Description – A descriptive name for the item. This will appear when the user hovers over its icon on the desktop
  • Target URL – Address / location of the resource on the web. For example, http://www.google.com would represent Google’s web site. Note that if the web item that you are editing is an image link then the “use image from library button” will appear at the side of the target URL text box. Clicking this button will set the target URL (the image) to the currently selected image in the library. If the library is not opened then the system will open the library up to allow you to select an image. Once you’ve selected an image, click the “use Image from library button” again
  • Shared – Enables / disables sharing of this resource. Disabling this item will prevent others from borrowing this resource and adding it to their own desktop
  • Privacy – This is the level of security that should be applied to this resource. There are 3 levels of security:
    • Public – Visible to all visitors
    • Private – Visible only to you
    • Friend – Visible only to you and your friends
  • Icon URL – This is the address / location of an image that you would like to represent this resource on the desktop. Note that, if the resource is an image and you leave this blank then Sharetops will use a version of the target image resource as its icon on the desktop. The “use image from library button” that appears at the side of the Icon URL text box allows you to select an image from the library to use as the icon. If the library is not opened then the system will open the library up to allow you to select an image. Once you’ve selected an image, click the “use Image from library button” again
  • Desktop – This option only appears in “Link to Desktop” types. This represents the desktop that the LTD points to
  • Icon Text Colour – This is the colour and opacity of the Name text that appears under the resources icon on the desktop
  • Layer – The layer represents the order in which opened assets are sorted on screen. Normally no sorting is applied and the asset that the user clicks on will always be brought to the front. You can change this default behaviour by changing the layer defined in the layer drop down. The following layer options are available:
    • None – The system takes care of layering
    • Behind icons – Sends the assets opened window behind all icons on the desktop
    • Layers 1 - 50 – Sets the layer of the opened asset to between 1 and 50 with 50 representing the top most layer
  • Hide Border / Header – This option allows you to hide the header and border of an open resource when a visitor views it
  • Hide Icon – This option will hide this resources icon from visitors
  • Force 40x40 icons – Enabled by default, this option forces all desktop icons to be 40x40 pixels in size. Disabling this allows the user to have different sized icons based upon the native size of the image that is used to represent the resource
  • Static – Enabling this feature will force the icon for this resource to be static preventing visitors from moving it around when they visit. Please note that when a visitor visits your desktop and moves things around or resizes them, it does not affect your original designed Desktops
  • View In Desktop – Most resources can be viewed on the desktop, such as images, videos, audio, RSS feeds etc. However, Sharetops does not support some video / audio and image formats. Disabling this option will cause Sharetops to open the resource in a new browser window when opened
  • Use Native Size – Some video and images are designed to work best in their native resolution. Enabling this option will force the dimensions of the resource to be whatever the designer of the resource meant them to be. However, enabling this feature will prevent resizing of the content
  • Repeat – If enabled then the video or audio resource will be repeated continuously until the user stops them
  • Clone Tool – This button will clone the current web item and send it to the selected desktop
Deleting Web Desktop Links

Deleting a desktop link is a simple case of hovering over a desktop icon then clicking the close button (located to the top right). You will be prompted to make sure that you do actually want to delete the desktop item, this prevents accidental deletions.
